ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's lacrosse team won its second game in three days on Monday afternoon, picking up a 14-9 non-conference triumph over visiting Alvernia University.
The Knights received the bulk of their offense on the day from the triumvirate of
Kaitlyn Conrad (5 g),
Calie Swegon (4 g) and
Brittany Cassidy (3 g), who combined for 12 of the team's 14 goals.
Gabby Curry was outstanding in goal, making 17 huge saves to pick up the win.
Much like Saturday's win over Cedar Crest, Neumann raced out to an early lead thanks to goals from Swegon, Conrad and
Courtney Petrucelli to put the Knights up 3-0 five minutes into the contest. The lead was short-lived though as Alvernia rattled off four unanswered goals to jump in front 4-3 at the 14:02 mark of the frame.
Conrad answered back four minutes later to knot the game up at four apiece and the remainder of the period saw the teams trading leads until halftime. The Golden Wolves retaliated with a pair of goals to go up 6-4, but the Knights fought back with a pair of late goals from Swegon and
Melanie Setting to send the game to halftime tied at 6-6.
The second half began much like the first ended, with the two teams trading tallies to make it 7-7 just over two minutes into the frame. From there, the remainder of the second stanza belonged to Neumann. After a Swegon goal made it 8-7 in favor of the Knights at the 27:37 mark of the period, the Knights would lead the rest of the way. The Golden Wolves kept the game close until the final 11 minutes of play, but four late unanswered goals from Neumann clinched the 14-9 win.
Neumann (4-4, 1-0) will hit the road for a non-conference matchup versus Rowan University on Wednesday, March 21
st. Game-time is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
