Women's Lacrosse Beats Griffins for Third Straight Win

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's lacrosse team won its third consecutive contest on Saturday morning with a comfortable 20-12 victory over Gwynedd Mercy University in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action.

Kaitlyn Conrad was outstanding in the win, recording nine goals and two assists on the day. Brittany Cassidy was also a force all over the field for Neumann, picking up four goals to go along with a team-high three caused-turnovers and six ground-balls. Calie Swegon also scored four times for the Knights, while goalie Gabby Curry made 14 saves in net to pick up the win.

The opening half of play would be very evenly played with each team creating numerous goal-scoring opportunities. The Knights struck first, scoring the opening two goals of the game in the first two minutes through Swegon and Cassidy to go up 2-0. The Griffins would not go quietly though, scoring three of the game's next five goals to bring the score-line back to 4-3 in favor of Neumann with 17:37 left in the frame.

The back and forth first half continued midway through the period, as the Knights responded back with a pair of goals from Swegon and Conrad to rebuild their lead to three at 6-3. Gwynedd responded with two goals of their own to cut the Neumann lead to 6-5, but three goals from Swegon, Cassidy and Conrad gave the Knights a 9-5 advantage with 6:54 left to play in the half. Neumann could not hold the four-goal lead into halftime though, as two late Griffin goals sent the game to the break with a score of 9-7 in favor of the Knights.

The second half would start much like the first, as the teams traded goals to begin the period. Conrad gave the Knights a 10-7 lead at the 28:08 mark before the Griffins scored twice to cut the lead to one at 10-9 with 25:40 left to play. That was as close as Gwynedd Mercy would get on the day though, as Neumann responded with seven of the game's next eight goals to give the hosts some breathing room at 17-10. The Griffins fought back for two goals in the final ten minutes of play to get the game back to within five, but the Knights added three late insurance markers to take home the 20-12 victory.

Neumann (5-4, 2-0 CSAC) will hit the road for its next game at Keystone College on Wednesday, March 28th. The CSAC contest is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
