Women's Lacrosse Falls in CSAC Action to Marywood

ASTON, Pa. – In a battle of two of the top teams in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) standings, the Neumann University women's lacrosse team dropped a 19-9 result to visiting Marywood University on Saturday afternoon.

Brittany Cassidy, Courtney Petrucelli and Keri Mallon all scored twice for Neumann, while Calie Swegon chipped in with a goal and two assists. Gabby Curry got the start in goal, making 18 saves in the loss.

The opening half of play between the two rivals would be tightly contested. Marywood scored three of the game's first four goals in the first 12 minutes of play, but the Knights responded back with three unanswered tallies in the next five minutes of play to take a 4-3 lead at the 13:55 mark. The lead did not last long though, as the Pacers knotted the contest at four apiece just 30 seconds later, then tacked on two more markers to take a 6-4 lead with just over eight minutes left to play in the first frame. Petrucelli found the back of the net late in the half to bring Neumann back to within one, but a Marywood goal with 42 seconds left in the period gave the visitors a 7-5 lead at the halftime break.

Despite the two goal deficit, Neumann came out firing to being the second stanza. The Knights scored three of the first four goals of the half, punctuated by two goals from Mallon to level the score at 8-8 with 26:36 left to play. Unfortunately for the Knights, their momentum subsided quickly. Marywood regained the lead three minutes later and went on an 11-1 run the remainder of the half to take home the 19-9 win.

Neumann (8-6, 4-2 CSAC) gets back to CSAC action next Tuesday, April 17th when the team plays host to Notre Dame of Maryland University. Game-time is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
