ASTON, Pa. - The Neumann University women's volleyball team closed out the 2018 Knights' Invitational by splitting a pair of matches versus New York University (0-3) and the University of Scranton (3-2).
After a pair of losses to open the tournament on Friday evening, the Knights were eager to find the win column on Saturday. Unfortunately for the hosts, New York University had other ideas in the opening game of the day. The Violets defeated Neumann in straight sets 25-23, 25-11 and 25-21.
Melanie Malseed led the Knights with 7 kills in the opening match while
Rachel Cray notched 21 assists.
Looking for its first win of the tournament, the Knights came out hungry for a win in the second match of the day versus Scranton. Neumann fell in the first game 25-21 before battling back to take the second and third games (25-21, 25-23). The Royals responded with a game four win to send the contest to a decisive fifth set, but the Knights would not be denied in the final set of the weekend. Tied at 9-9 in the decisive frame, Neumann rattled off 6 of the last 7 points of the match to close out the Royals by a score of 15-10, winning the contest by a count of 3-2.
Malseed was outstanding again in the win, leading the team in both kills (25) and digs (21). Cray was also excellent in the second match recording 44 assists, while
Hayley Glah picked up 18 digs.
Neumann (7-7) will hit the road for its next match at Penn State Berks on Wednesday, September 19th. The contest is slated for a 7:00 PM start.
