Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women's Volleyball Drops Two at Frostburg Quad

FROSTBURG, Md. - The Neumann University women's volleyball team wrapped up its weekend at the Frostburg Quad with a pair of defeats at the hands of Christopher Newport University (3-0) and Frostburg State University (3-1).

Game one of the day did not go as planned for the Knights as the team fell by a score of 3-0 to Christopher Newport. Neumann hung tough with the Captains in the opening set, but could not keep pace late. A block by Rachael Hoffman tied the frame up at 18-18, but a 7-1 run from the Captains closed out the set by a score of 25-19. Christopher Newport led wire to wire in a 25-19 set two win before closing out the match in the third and final set by a score of 25-21. Neumann tried their best to fight back, leading 21-20 late in the set before conceding five straight points to seal the contest.

Melanie Malseed led the way for Neumann in the first match of the day with 12 kills and 11 digs. Rachel Cray added 21 assists in the loss.

Neumann hoped to respond with its first win of the weekend in its second match of the day versus tournament hosts Frostburg State, but the visitors dropped a 3-1 result. The contest started nicely for the Knights when the team picked up a convincing 25-19 win in the first set, but Frostburg State rallied for three consecutive set wins to take home the victory. The Bobcats took sets two (25-20) and three (25-16) comfortably before a tight battle in the fourth and deciding set. Neumann looked to be ready to send the game to a fifth set with a 24-22 lead, but Frostburg State responded with two points to tie the frame at 24 apiece. The Knights looked to stop their momentum, but the Bobcats continued to roll, scoring three of the set's final four points to pick up the 27-25 win.

Malseed continued to carry the Knights in the second contest, picking up 13 kills to go along with 22 digs. Alex Koppany chipped in with 20 digs in the loss.

Neumann (8-11) will have two days off before returning to the court on Tuesday, October 2nd for its Atlantic East Conference opener versus Marywood University. The match is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
