ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Neumann University women's ice hockey team dropped a 5-1 result to United College Hockey Conference (UCHC) rival Nazareth College on Friday evening in the two teams' first ever matchup.
Jackie Schneider scored the Knights' lone goal of the contest, while
Helen Cooney made 51 saves in goal in the loss.
The first frame was a fairly evenly played period, but Nazareth would find the only two goals. The Golden Flyers scored just 39 seconds into play to take a 1-0 lead, then doubled their advantage with just over two minutes left in the period to take a 2-0 lead into intermission.
Nazareth continued to dominate play in the second stanza. The Golden Flyers outshot Neumann by a count of 26-5 in the frame and tacked on two more tallies midway through the period to take a 4-0 lead. Schneider got one goal back for the Knights with just 24 seconds left in the period off a feed from
Taylor Cullen, but the game headed to the third with a score of 4-1 in favor of the hosts.
The Knights tried to fight back in the third period, but Nazareth continued its solid play by again doubling Neumann up in shots (18-9). The Golden Flyers added an insurance marker just 48 seconds into the final frame and coasted the rest of the way to take home the 5-1 win.
Neumann (3-11-0, 2-7-0 UCHC) will get a rematch versus Nazareth tomorrow as it looks to get a big two points in the UCHC standings. Puck-drop on Saturday is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
