Women's Hockey Rebounds for Win Over Golden Flyers

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Neumann University women's ice hockey team rebounded from a tough loss Friday evening to pick up a much needed 5-1 win on the road at Nazareth College in United College Hockey Conference (UCHC) action on Saturday afternoon.

Helen Cooney was the top star for the Knights on the day, making 52 saves in goal to pick up the win. Katelyn Brown led the way for Neumann offensively on the afternoon, registering a goal and two assists in the win, while Angeline Taiariol, Jackie Schneider, Claudia Trionfo and Mollie Johnson also scored for Neumann.

After a slow start in Friday's contest that saw Neumamn fall behind the Golden Flyers by a score of 4-0, the Knights knew they needed to get out of the gates faster in Saturday's matinee. The visitors did just that, scoring just 1:49 into the game via a goal from Taiariol to help Neumann jump out to an early 1-0 lead. Despite the quick start, Nazareth fought back, knotting things up late in the period to send the game to intermission even at one apiece.

The Golden Flyers dominated territorially in the second stanza, but excellent goaltending from Cooney kept the Knights in the game. The junior net-minder made 13 saves in the frame, keeping Nazareth off the board and allowing Neumann to again work its way in front. The Knights struck twice in quick succession early in the period, getting a power play goal from Brown at 4:07 followed by an even strength marker from Schneider at 5:47 to take a two-goal lead. Cooney took over from there, making several key saves late in the period to keep the two-goal cushion into the second intermission.

Nazareth threw everything it had at the Knights trying to get the game tied in the third, but despite outshooting the visitors 17-6 in the frame, Cooney again had an answer for every attempt. The shot-stopper made 17 saves in the frame to help seal the win for the visitors. Trionfo and Johnson each scored insurance markers in the period, and Neumann skated away with a huge two points in the UCHC standings.

Neumann (4-11-0, 3-7-0 UCHC) will look to continue to climb the UCHC standings next weekend when it heads to Chatham University for more conference action. Puck-drop in Pittsburgh on Friday, January 18th is scheduled for 7:10 PM.
