ASTON, Pa. - The Neumann University women's ice hockey team returned home after two weekends on the road with a 3-1 non-conference loss to Morrisville State College on Friday night.
Helen Cooney was sensational in goal with another 50 save performance, while
Katelyn Brown was the team's lone goal-scorer on the evening.
Morrisville State controlled the territorial advantage in the first period, but Cooney was sharp in the frame, stopping all 15 shots fired her way to keep the Mustangs off the board. Neumann registered just six shots in the opening 20 minutes, but the hosts were opportunistic in the stanza. With just over five minutes left in the period, Brown snapped home a beauty of a wrist shot to the top corner of the goal to give the Knights a 1-0 lead heading to the second.
The visitors had an early answer for Neumann in the second stanza though, scoring just 24 seconds into the frame on a deflected shot from the point to knot the contest up at 1–1. The Mustangs continued their momentum as the period progressed, generating five power plays over the 20 minutes, including a 5-on-3 power play early in the stanza. Led by Cooney however, the Knights did not wilt under the relentless pressure in their own end. Neumann showed tremendous resolve, killing all five man-advantages to keep the game tied heading to the third.
The Knights hoped to find a game-winning goal in the final frame, but another early Mustang goal took the wind out of the hosts' sails. Morrisville State scored at the 2:33 mark to take a 2-1 lead, then used some excellent defending to hold Neumann at bay until late in the game. The Knights earned a power play with three minutes left to play and then pulled their goalie late in the man-advantage to create a 6-on-4 opportunity. Neumann had a few golden opportunities to get the game tied, but could not break through with an equalizer. The Mustangs then sealed the win with an empty-netter as time expired to clinch the 3-1 victory.
Neumann (5-12-0, 4-7-0 UCHC) will look to bounce back tomorrow with a rematch versus Morrisville State. Puck-drop is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
