HERSHEY, Pa. - The Neumann University women's ice hockey team found its way back into the win column on Tuesday afternoon, picking up a hard-fought 4-3 victory over United College Hockey Conference (UCHC) rival Lebanon Valley College.
Â
Katelyn Brown,
Jordyn Cholish and
Jackie Schneider each recorded a goal and an assist, while
Claudia Trionfo also scored for the Knights.
Helen Cooney picked up the win in goal, making 20 saves.
Â
A quiet first period entered the final minute of the frame without either team finding the back of the net. Just as it seemed the game would head to intermission scoreless though, Lebanon Valley struck to make it 1-0 in favor of the hosts. Despite being outshot by Neumann 15-9 in the period, the Flying Dutchmen scored with just one second remaining on the clock to take the lead into the break.
Â
The Knights continued to struggle to find a breakthrough in the second stanza. Neumann fired 14 more shots toward the Lebanon Valley goal in the frame, but could not find the back of the net. The Flying Dutchmen would then double their lead at the 9:23 mark of the period to take a 2-0 lead into the third.
Â
Playing with a bit more desperation in the third period, Neumann got right back into the game early in the frame. Using a power play, the Knights scored a minute into the period via Cholish to bring the score back to 2-1. The comeback bid took a bit of of hit just five minutes later though, as Lebanon Valley tacked on an insurance marker to build its lead back to two goals at 3–1 with just 13:45 left to play in the game.
Â
Needing some of its best hockey of the season to fight back in the contest, Neumann delivered a fantastic effort the rest of the way. The Knights caught lightning in a bottle midway through the frame, scoring three times in just two minutes to stun the Flying Dutchmen. Schneider tallied on the power play at 12:02 off a feed from
Braeden Ott to make it 3-2, then Trionfo ripped home an equalizer just a minute and a half later to knot the contest up at 3-3. Keeping its foot on the pedal, Neumann then nudged its way in front with a goal from Brown at the 14:04 mark to complete the comeback. The Knights then used some excellent team defense to see out the remaining six minutes, skating away with a dramatic 4-3 win to pick up a huge two points in the UCHC standings.
Â
Neumann (3-10-0, 2-6-0 UCHC) will head to Nazareth College for more UCHC action this Friday, January 11th. Puck-drop in upstate New York is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
