ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's basketball team fell short to Gwynedd Mercy University 82-77 on Wednesday evening in an Atlantic East Conference contest.
Isaiah Wilmore led five Knights in double-figures with 18 points.
Mark Perry had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Nasir Cassel tallied 14 points, including three baskets from downtown.
Jordan Collins and
Raquan Brown-Johnson each netted 12 points.
Both teams had runs in the first half. The Griffins opened the game by scoring nine of the first 11 points. The Knights then went on a 12-2 run to take a 14-11 advantage. Midway through the half, and the teams knotted at 16, Neumann went on a 9-0 run for a 25-16 lead. Gwynedd Mercy answered with seven straight points. The teams traded baskets up until halftime and they went into the break tied at 33.
The Griffins slowly began to build up their lead in the second half and with eight minutes remaining in regulation held an 11 point lead, 66-55. The teams would trade mini runs as the Griffins could not pull away and the Knights staying within striking distance.
With a 75-64 Gwynedd Mercy advantage, Neumann went on an 11-2 run to pull within two, 77-75, with just under two minutes remaining on the clock. The teams traded missed shots and turnovers over the next minute and the game came down to the final 60 seconds. The Griffins went 3-for-4 from the line and then Perry hit a layup for an 80-77 score with 32 seconds remaining. Gwynedd Mercy went 2-for-2 from the line to seal the game and prevent the comeback by the Knights.
Neumann (9-7, 0-3 Atlantic East) will head to Marywood University next Wednesday to continue conference action. The men will tip-off at 8:00 PM, following the women.
