RYE, N.Y. - The Neumann University women's ice hockey team saw its undefeated conference start come to an end on Friday evening, falling by a score of 5-1 at Manhattanville College in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) contest.
Â
Katelyn Brown continued her torrid start to the season with her sixth goal of the season, while
Helen Cooney took the loss in goal despite making 28 saves.
Â
A penalty filled first frame remained scoreless until midway through the period. Each team accumulated four penalties in the opening 11:27, but neither side could break through on the power play. Manhattanville would finally break the ice at the 11:50 mark of the period and hold on to its 1-0 lead heading into intermission with a 10-4 edge in shots.
Â
The Valiants kept their foot on the pedal into the second stanza, scoring twice in a 28 second span midway through the period to grab a commanding 3-0 lead with just under eight minutes to go in the frame. Neumann began to chip away at the Manhattanville lead the rest of the period though, as Brown lit the lamp at 13:59 off assists from
Claudia Trionfo and
Jeannie Padden to make it 3-1. The Knights had a few more chances late in the period to cut the lead even further, but could not solve the Valiant net-minder as the team headed to the third trailing by a pair of goals.
Â
Neumann fought hard to get back into the contest in the third, but a pair of goals from Manhattanville in the final frame sealed the 5-1 conference win for the Valiants in the battle for first place in the UCHC South division. The hosts finished the game with a 33-23 edge in shots.
Â
Neumann (3-2-0, 2-1-0 UCHC) will have the rest of the weekend off before returning to action next Friday, November 22nd at Chatham University. Puck-drop is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
