ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's ice hockey team fell in a back and forth affair to Lawrence University, 5-4, on Friday evening in its first non-conference contest of the season.
Tyler Roy stood in net for his first collegiate contest for the Knights and made 23 saves.
Evan Hoey tallied a goal and an assist for Neumann.
Ryan Swain,
Eric Madison and
Grant Universal also lit the lamp.
All four goals in the first period came in a five-minute span. Lawrence netted its first goal at the 2:55 mark. A a minute later, Swain tied up the match with a feed from
Thomas Mansbridge. Two minutes after Neumann tied the game, it took a 2-1 lead as Madison put the puck in the back of the net. Hoey and
Dionne Demke tallied the assists. Lawrence quickly responded two minutes later to tie the game 2-2. The teams went into the first intermission knotted at two.
Scoring in the second period again came in a short span, this time towards the end of the period. The Vikings took a 3-2 lead with at the 15:23 mark of the second during 4-on-4 action. Less than two minutes later, Hoey tied the contest off assists from
Richie Brusco and
Clay Boyd. Just before the buzzer sounded to end the second period, Universal snuck the puck into the net for a 4-3 lead after two periods. Brusco and
Barry Kneedler tallied the assists while the teams were playing 4-on-4.
Early in the third period, Lawrence tied the game at four. As the back and forth game looked like it was going to get to overtime, the Vikings found the back of the net with 2:55 left in regulation. The Knight put shots on net in an attempt to tie the game but could break through for the fifth goal.
Neumann (2-5) will host St. Norbert on tomorrow evening in its second non-conference matchup. Puck drop is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
