ASTON, Pa. - The Neumann University women's ice hockey team won for the second straight day on Saturday afternoon, picking up a 4-1 United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) victory over rival Stevenson University.
Â
Katelyn Brown was unstoppable on the afternoon for the Knights, picking up three goals and an assist in the win.
Helen Cooney was also sensational on the day in goal, stopping 48 shots to earn the win in net.
Â
Looking for its second win of the weekend, Neumann kept its momentum from Friday's victory rolling into Saturday. Despite being heavily outshot in the first frame, two moments of brilliance from Brown got the Knights off to a fast start. The junior forward got the scoring started at the 2:09 mark after dangling through three Stevenson players with some sensational stick-handling before burying a puck past the Mustang goaltender to put the hosts up 1-0. Brown then doubled the Neumann lead midway through the period, firing another puck past the visiting net-minder at 10:51 to give the hosts a 2-0 lead heading to intermission.
Â
Brown continued her dominance early in the second stanza, tallying her third goal of the game just 22 seconds into the period to complete her natural hat trick and give the Knights a commanding 3-0 lead. The Mustangs pressed to get back into the game with 36 total shots through the first 40 minutes of the game, but Cooney denied every shot the visitors threw at her. Just as the game looked to be heading to the third at 3-0, the Knights found a way to add a bit more insurance. After a
Braeden Ott point shot was saved,
Kyleigh Prance banged home the rebound to give Neumann a comfortable 4-0 leading heading to the final 20 minutes.
Â
Stevenson kept things interesting in the third period by outshooting the Knights by a count of 13-2, but the Mustangs could only beat Cooney once midway through the frame. The senior Neumann goaltender continued to be excellent, finishing the contest with 48 saves on 49 shots to help the Knights clinch the important 4-1 conference victory.
Â
Neumann (3-1-0, 2-0-0 UCHC) will hit the road next weekend as it looks to continue its hot conference start. The Knights will head to Manhattanville College next Friday, November 15th for a 7:00 PM start.
