ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's basketball team fell to Misericordia University 60-57 on Wednesday evening in non-conference action.
Waheem Lowman led the Knights with 14 points.
Anthony Mitchell tallied a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds while adding five steals.
Dennis Robinson added 10 points.
Haneef Vaughn and
Sanoussi Abdourhamane each grabbed 10 boards.
The teams took some time to get warmed up and the first basket did not come until a minute and a half into the game. The Cougars netted the first seven points of the contest. Vaughn put the Knights on the board almost four minutes into the half. Midway through the first half, a three-pointer by Lowman tied the game at 12.
Jordyn Kendrick followed with a jumper to give Neumann its first lead of the game. The Knights took a 24-23 lead into the half.
The teams traded baskets over the first six minutes of the second half, had five lead changes and a tied score of 35. The Cougars then went on a 9-2 run to take a 44-37 lead with 12 minutes left in regulation. The Knights then scores six straight points to pull within one. Misericordia increased its lead to six 53-47. Lowman connected on two free throws to knot the game at 53 with under five minutes remaining. A minute later, the Cougars hit a three pointer to take the lead back.
Over the final two minutes, the Knights tried to even the score. A jumper by Abdourhamane brought Neumann within two, 59-57, with 22 seconds left. The Cougars missed the front end of a one-and-one and the Knights got the rebound but could not get the tying basket. Misericordia then went one-for-two from the line for a three-point game. Neumann got the ball over midcourt but could not get a shot off.
Neumann (5-5) will remain home and will host Cairn University on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is slated for 1:00 PM.
