Women's Hockey Keeps Playoff Hopes Alive With Win at King's

PITTSDON, Pa. - The Neumann University women's ice hockey team continued its run towards the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) playoffs on Friday evening, taking home a comfortable 7-1 win over King's College.

Jackie Schneider scored four times for the Knights and Angeline Taiariol added four assists. Emma Paton also tallied three assists, while Katelyn Brown and Claudia Trionfo each registered a goal and an assist. Helen Cooney made the start in goal, stopping 29 shots to pick up the win.

Knowing they needed two wins this weekend to keep their season alive, the Knights came out with a fury to open the contest. The visitors rattled off 27 first period shots and blitzed the Monarchs for three goals in the opening 20 minutes to take a commanding 3-0 lead. A Prance goal midway through the period was sandwiched by two goals from Schneider in the stanza as Neumann went to the dressing room up by three.

The onslaught continued into the middle frame, as the Knights found the back of the net three more times to widen their lead. Brown lit the lamp just 2:58 into the period to make it 4-0, but the Monarchs answered back with a goal of their own to bring the hosts back to within three. The remainder of the period would be all Neumann though, as Trionfo scored midway through the stanza and Schneider capped off her hat trick later in the frame to give the visitors a 6-1 lead heading to the final 20 minutes of play.

With the game in hand in the final period of play, the Knights coasted the rest of the way. Cooney stopped all 11 shots she faced and Schneider found the back of the net for the fourth time with 17 seconds left in the game to clinch the 7-1 victory for the visitors.

With the win, Neumann (7-16-1, 6-10-1 UCHC) remains alive for the final UCHC postseason spot. Stevenson lost to Elmira in their game Friday night, so the race for the sixth playoff spot will come down to Saturday's contests. The Knights will host King's tomorrow at 2:00 PM, while the Mustangs take on Elmira at 3:00 PM. If Neumann wins and Stevenson loses, the Knights will clinch the final playoff spot.
