ASTON, Pa. - The Neumann University women's ice hockey team clinched a berth in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference playoffs on a Saturday afternoon, knocking off King's College by a score of 4-0 on senior day.
Katelyn Brown and
Sid Squires carried the offense on the afternoon, each scoring twice in the victory.
Helen Cooney picked up her third shutout of the season in goal with 19 saves and also added an assist in the win.
In a must-win situation on Saturday afternoon, the Knights delivered a solid all-around performance from the opening whistle. After honoring its seniors prior to the game Neumann didn't take long to get the scoring started. An excellent play from
Jordyn Cholish created the game's first goal. The senior dangled around a Monarch defender, fired a shot on goal that was saved by the King's goalie before finding the stick of a wide open Squires, who buried the rebound to give the hosts a 1-0 lead at 5:54. Neumann would outshoot the visitors by a count of 17-8 in the first frame, but could not add to its lead as the game remained 1-0 heading to intermission.
The Knights continued to dominate in the second stanza, outshooting the Monarchs 21-5 in the period. Again though, Neumann was only able to capitalize once in the period, as Brown fired home a shot off assists from seniors
Jackie Schneider and
Angeline Taiariol at 8:17 to put the Knights up a pair heading into the third.
Looking to put the contest away late, the hosts found two insurance tallies early in the final frame. Squires tipped home a
Steph Grundy shot from the point to make it 3-0 at 6:51, before Brown capped off the scoring with a great deke on a shorthanded breakaway to seal the 4-0 win.Â
The perfect end to senior day came an hour or so after the contest. After every senior registered a point in the win over King's, the team found out it would be making the playoffs after learning of Stevenson's 5-1 defeat to Elmira. With the Knights' win and Mustang's loss, Neumann clinches the sixth seed in the UCHC playoffs.
Neumann (8-16-1, 7-10-1 UCHC) will await the result of tomorrow's Nazareth versus William Smith game to determine their opponent in the first round of the playoffs. Regardless of who they play, the team will hit the road next Saturday for their opening game of the playoffs.
