BALTIMORE, Md. - The Neumann University women's lacrosse team opened its season in emphatic fashion, picking up a 21-10 win on the road at Goucher College on Saturday afternoon.
Kaitlyn Conrad carried the Knights' offense on the day with six goals, while
Carlee Herrin (3 g, 1 a),
Reilly Fiedler (3 g, 1 a) and
Ally Bee (2 g, 2 a) all added four points apiece.
Lydia Beckmann (1 g) led the team with five ground balls, four caused turnovers and five draw controls, while freshman goalie
Catriona Corrigan made 14 saves to pick up her first career win in net.
Fired up to start the season, the Knights came out on fire to start the game. Neumann picked up seven of the game's first eight goals to take a commanding 7-1 early lead. Herrin and Conrad were the early catalysts, each netting two goals in the opening 20 minutes of play. Goucher got a few goals back late in the half to make it 7-3, but a pair of Neumann goals in the final three minutes of the frame made it 9-3 heading to halftime.
The Gophers got back into the game early in the second half with four of the first six tallies in the period to make it 11-7, but that was as close as the hosts would get. The Knights again used a 7-1 run midway through the half to blow the game wide open. The burst was led by Conrad, who scored four times during the rally to give Neumann a comfortable lead they would never relinquish. With the game in hand from there, the visitors cruised to a 21-10 victory for their first win of the young season.
Neumann (1-0) will have a week off before taking on perennial power TCNJ on Saturday, February 23rd. Game time in New Jersey is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
