ASTON, Pa. - The Neumann University women's lacrosse team suffered a setback on senior day Saturday afternoon, falling by a score of 18-7 to visiting Marymount University in Atlantic East Conference action.
Brittany Cassidy,
Kaitlyn Conrad and
Courtney Petrucelli all tallied twice in the loss for Neumann, who also received a goal from
Reilly Fiedler.
Catriona Corrigan was strong in goal, stopping 15 shots.
The opening half of play was closely contested between two teams fighting for Atlantic East playoff positions. Marymount struck first just under five minutes into play to take a 1-0 lead, but a pair of goals from Fiedler and Conrad gave Neumann its first lead at the 21:33 mark. The Saints fought back for two goals of their own to take a 3-2 lead before an excellent individual effort from Cassidy leveled the game at three apiece with 18:31 left to play in the first frame.
The back and forth contest continued midway through the half. Marymount broke the tie with two more tallies to take a 5-3 lead, but Conrad answered back at 16:05 to make it 5-4. The Saints added a sixth goal with under eight minutes to play in the half, but again the Knights has a reply. A slick move and finish from Petrucelli brought the deficit back to one at 6-5. Marymount would have the last laugh in the half though, scoring with 5:35 left to take a 7-5 lead to the break.
Neumann kept pace with the Saints early the second stanza as each team scored twice in the opening minutes of the half. Cassidy and Petrucelli found the back of the net for the Knights as the two goal deficit remained with a score of 9-7 in favor of Marymount with 18:27 left to go. Unfortunately for the hosts, that would be the closest they would get the rest of the way. Marymount caught fire and Neumann could not catch a bounce in the final minutes of the game as the Saints closed the contest out on a 9-0 run over the final 17 minutes of play to seal the comfortable 18-7 victory.
Neumann (9-6, 2-2 Atlantic East) will return to action next Wednesday, April 17th for another conference matchup with Wesley College. Game-time is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
