Knights Bats Come Alive in Win, Yenchik Gets 100th Career Hit

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University used 19 hits to defeat Cairn University 14-5 on Monday afternoon in a non-conference contest.

Senior Curt Yenchik went 4-for-4 with five RBI and four runs scored. In the third inning, the senior hit a homerun that hit the scoreboard. The two-run shot was the 16th of his career, setting a program record since stats have been kept electronically, as well as his 100th career hit. Two former Knights had hit 15 homeruns in their career: Buddy Elgin (2012-15) and Cody MacNair (2015-18). Not satisfied with just one homerun, Yenchik hit his second long ball of the game in the sixth inning.

John Lindeborn went 3-for-4 in the game and also hit two homeruns. The senior knocked in four runs and scored three. Marty Cortellessa was 3-for-5 with a RBI and run scored. Tre'Zhan Selby his first collegiate long ball in the game as Neumann tallied five bombs in the game.

Phil Sanborn got the win as the sophomore went 7.0 innings on the mound. He allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits and struck out four. John Schoelkopf went the final 2.0 innings on the mound and did not allow a hit.

The Highlanders got off to a hot start, plating their five runs in the first inning. Cairn then left the bases loaded in the second inning. However, over the next five innings, Sanborn allowed just one hit and faced the minimum as the baserunner was caught stealing.

The Knights, who scored at least one run in each inning from the second to the seventh, took advantage of a Highlander error to score in the second inning. In the third inning, the homerun derby began. With two outs, Lindeborn hit the first homerun of the game, a solo shot. Danny Padilla followed with a bunt single before Yenchik stepped to the plate to hit his record setting homerun.

The homeruns continued in the fourth inning as Selby hit a two-run knock with Cortellessa on base to put the Knights up 6-5. Schoelkopf hit a single and came around to score on Lindeborn's second homerun of the game.

The Knights added two more runs in the fifth. In the sixth, Lindeborn walked and scored on Yenchik's second homerun of the contest. Jake Urena and Stephen Caruso then hit back-to-back doubles for another run. Yenchik knocked in Lindeborn for the final run of the game as part of three straight singles in the seventh.

Neumann (11-13) will face Immaculata on Wednesday in the second game of the season series. The game will be played at Neumann.
