Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Women's Hockey Dropped by Red Dragons

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's ice hockey team fell for the second consecutive day on Saturday afternoon, dropping an 8-2 result in non-conference action to visiting SUNY Cortland.

A pair of freshmen in Georgia Wunder and Heather Levy scored the goals on the afternoon for the Knights, who received 33 saves in goal from Helen Cooney and Alexa Lamplugh.

Saturday's game started much like Friday's contest, with Cooney stealing the show in the opening period of play. Cortland dominated the shot count by a margin of 14-5 in the first frame, but Cooney kept the Knights in the game with 13 saves. The senior net-minder's best saves of the period came at the 6:15 mark, when she made two point-blank saves while falling backwards towards the goal line to keep the score even at 0-0. Just like last night's matchup though, the Red Dragons were finally able to solve Cooney late in the period. Cortland scored with 58 seconds left in the frame to take a 1-0 lead to intermission.

The floodgates would open in the second stanza as Cortland took a stranglehold of the game. The Red Dragons scored just 28 seconds into the period, then tacked on three more goals in the frame to jump out to a commanding 5-0 lead. Shots in the period were 13-8 in favor of the visitors.

Cortland continued to press forward in the final frame, recording three power play goals in the last 20 minutes to widen its lead even further. Neumann was able to find a few consolation goals in the period though, as Wunder tipped home a Mikaylee Henhawk point shot for her first career goal at the 10:32 mark. Levy then scored on an excellent individual effort while being hauled down on a breakaway with just over three minutes left to go to round out the scoring on the afternoon at 8-2 in favor of the Red Dragons.

Neumann (7-7-0) will look to get back into the win column next Friday, January 17th when the team takes on King's College. Puck-drop is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
