ASTON, Pa. - The Neumann University women's ice hockey team got back into the win column on Friday evening, picking up a 5-1 victory over visiting King's College in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) action.
Â
Jeannie Padden (2 g) and
Claudia Trionfo (2 a) paced the Neumann attack on the evening, while
Katelyn Brown,
Taylor Cullen and
Mollie Johnson also scored.
Helen Cooney was sharp in goal, stopping 19 of the 20 shots she faced to pick up the win.
Â
The Knights jumped all over the Monarchs in the first frame, firing 11 shots on the King's cage compared to just two shots for the visitors. Neumann used that heavy shot advantage early to take a 1-0 lead through Johnson, who fired home a point shot on the power play at the 3:16 mark to put the hosts out in front. The Knights then doubled their lead midway through the period when Cullen snapped a wicked wrist shot over the Monarch goaltender's shoulder for her first goal of the season to make it 2-0 heading to the second.
Â
King's would not go away quietly, fighting back with a goal 1:31 into the second stanza to cut the Neumann lead in half. That was as close as the Monarchs would get though, as the Knights used two nifty goals from Padden to pad their lead to 4-1. The second of the two goals from the junior forward came short-handed, as she deked the goalie out of her skates before depositing the puck into the back of the net to give the hosts a commanding three goal lead moving to the third.
Â
Neumann continued to dominate in the final frame with 24 shots in the period. The lone goal of the remaining 20 minutes of play cane off the stick of Brown, who dangled around four Monarch defenders before burying her team and UCHC leading 15th goal of the season to seal the win for the Knights.
Â
Neumann (8-7-0, 5-1-0 UCHC) returns to home ice tomorrow for another conference contest versus Wilkes University. Puck-drop is slated for 2:00 PM.
