ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's basketball team's comeback attempt fell short in a 69-64 final against Gwynedd Mercy University on Saturday afternoon.
Prior to tip-off, the Knights honored their two seniors:
Waheem Lowman and
Sanoussi Abdourhamane. Lowman finished the game with 20 points. Abdourhamane had a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds. He also tallied six blocks.
Dennis Robinson scored 13 points and
Justin Smith added 11.
Midway through the first half, the Griffins held a one-point advantage, 15-14. Gwynedd Mercy then went on an 11-4 run for a 26-18 lead. The Griffins continued to build their lead before halftime and took a 41-26 advantage into the break.
Five minutes into the second half, Gwynedd Mercy had built up an 18-point lead, 50-32. Neumann then began to chip its way into the deficit. With 7:29 on the clock, Lowman connected on a layup to bring the Knights to within four, 54-50. The teams went on to trade baskets and with 1:52 left in regulation, Smith went to the line down by two. He went 1-for-2 to bring Neumann to within one, 64-63. The Knights had the chance to take the lead but missed the basket with under a minute on the clock and the Griffins answered with a three-pointer and a four-point edge. Free throws used up the rest of the clock and Gwynedd Mercy held on for the 69-64 win.
Neumann (8-16, 2-9 Atlantic East) will wrap up the regular season on Wednesday when it travels to Marywood. Action is slated to get underway at 8:00 PM.
