READING, Pa. - The Neumann University women's ice hockey team rebounded from a pair of losses last weekend with a much needed 4-1 victory on the road at Alvernia University on Friday evening in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) action.
Â
Jeannie Padden led the Knights on the evening with a goal and an assist, while
Mikaylee Henhawk,
Taylor Cullen and
Claudia Trionfo also scored.
Helen Cooney continued her excellent play in goal, stopping 19 shots to pick up the win.
Â
Neumann dominated the opening 20 minutes of play to the tune of a 16-7 edge in shots. The Knights couldn't break through with a goal though until late in the frame, as Henhawk scored with just two minutes left in the period to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage heading to intermission.
Â
The visitors continued to outplay a Alvernia in the second stanza, but could not find any insurance in the period. Despite out-shooting the hosts by a count of 17-8, it would be the Golden Wolves who would strike back with the game's next goal right at the death of the period. Alvernia scored against the run of play with just four seconds remaining to knot the contest at 1-1 moving to the third.
Â
Neumann did not let the Alvernia momentum last long though, jumping all over the Golden Wolves to start the third. The Knights scored two goals in the span of 25 seconds in the first four minutes of the frame via Cullen and Padden to jump out to a 3-1 lead. Trionfo then capped off the scoring late with a goal at 19:08 to seal the 4-1 conference win and head coach
Gina Kearns McLaughlin's 50th career coaching win.
Â
Neumann (10-11-0, 7-5-0 UCHC) will head to Stevenson University tomorrow for its biggest game of the season. Battling for second place in the UCHC South, the two teams will face-off at 7:00 PM.
