ASTON, Pa. - The Neumann University women's lacrosse team returned to Aston for its home opener on Saturday evening, falling by a score of 15-5 to visiting Goucher College in non-conference action.
Courtney Petrucelli tallied twice for the Knights in the loss, while
Catriona Corrigan stopped 12 shots on the evening.
Reilly Fiedler got the Knights off to a fast start in the non-conference contest with a goal just 1:40 into the game, but the hosts could not build on the early marker. Neumann would be shut down over most of the remainder of the half, while Goucher gained control of the matchup. The Gophers struck for seven straight goals over a 14 minute span while also holding the Knights scoreless to take a commanding 7-1 lead with 12:13 left in the first frame. Neumann fought back with two unanswered goals from Petrucelli and
Carlee Herrin to bring the score back to 7-3, but two more Goucher goals to end the half made it 9-3 heading to intermission.
Much like the first half, the Knights opened the second stanza buzzing by scoring a goal via Petrucelli seven minutes in to make it 9-4. Once again though, the Gophers stopped all of the Neumann momentum with another multi-goal run. This time Goucher scored four unanswered markers to jump out to a comfortable 13-4 lead.
Keri Mallon found the back of the net late for the hosts to make it 13-5, but two more goals from the visitors in the final minute of play sealed the 15-5 win for Goucher.
Neumann (0-3) will have three days to recover before returning home for another non-conference matchup with Hood College on Tuesday, March 10th. Game-time is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
