ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University field hockey team was edged by Notre Dame University of Maryland 2-1 on Monday afternoon.
The teams played a scoreless first half. The Knights held a 6-3 shot advantage after the first 30 minutes along with a 5-4 advantage in corners.
Rachel Koerner took a shot midway through the second quarter, but it went just side.
Kylie Fitchett had two shots on goal in the second quarter, including one just before the buzzer sounded, but the Gator goalie was able to stop both.
Early in the third quarter, Notre Dame was awarded a penalty stroke.
Megan Frame made the stop to keep the game scoreless. But less than a minute later, the Gators scored off a give-and-go, set up by a penalty corner, to take a 1-0 lead.
In the 50
th minute, the Gators were awarded another penalty stroke. Frame got a piece of the ball, but it snuck into the lower corner.
Less than a minute later,
Gianna Guido scored Neumann's first goal at home this season. Guido in-bounded a penalty corner to
Lexi Stouffer. Guido was able to tip in a shot from Stouffer to pull the Knights to within one 2-1. Neumann tried to tie the game at two but could not find the back of the net again and Notre Dame came away with the 2-1 win.
Frame finished the game with six saves. Fitchett had two shots while Koerner added two.
Neumann (2-11) gets back into conference play on Wednesday as it travels to Gwynedd Mercy. Action is slated to get underway at 6:00 PM.
