REISTERSTOWN, Md. - The Neumann University women's hockey team dropped a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) road contest on Friday afternoon, falling by a score of 6-2 at Stevenson University.
Katelyn Brown and
Mikaylee Henhawk scored for Neumann in the loss, while
Michelle Winand-Bacon made 43 saves in net.
Eager to get back into the win column after a tough loss at Wilkes last Saturday, the Knights played well early in Friday's contest. Using a power play just 6:55 into the first frame, Neumann jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Henhawk buried her first goal of the season off assists from
Sid Squires and
Georgi Rowland. The early lead would remain until late in the period, when Stevenson fought back with an equalizer. The Mustangs tallied with 44 seconds left in the stanza to tie things up at 1-1 heading to intermission.
The hosts carried that momentum over into the middle frame, dominating most of the period while taking a stranglehold of the game on the scoreboard. Stevenson notched three unanswered goals to start the period, grabbing a 4-1 lead with 7:40 remaining in the stanza. Brown got the Knights back into the conference matchup with a goal at 14:35 of the period to make it 4-2, but a 5th Mustang goal with under three minutes left in the frame gave Stevenson a commanding three goal lead moving into the third.
The visitors fought to level the contest in the final frame, but the Mustangs stomped out any possible comeback attempt with a sixth goal early in the period. With a comfortable 6-2 lead, Stevenson cruised for the remainder of the game, skating away with the four goal victory to pick up valuable points in the UCHC standings.
Neumann (1-4, 1-2 UCHC) will look to avenge its loss quickly, as the Knights face off against the Mustangs again tomorrow afternoon. Puck-drop at IceWorks is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
