SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Neumann University men's basketball team battled No. 8 Swarthmore College on Wednesday evening in non-conference action. The Knights fell to the Garnet 85-68.
Five Knights scored in double-figures in the game, led by
Jalen Vaughns and
Kyson Rawls each netting 16 points.
KJ Speller and
Tyler Norwood each scored 11 while
Tony James added 10. Vaughns led Neumann in rebounds with nine.
The Garnet got off to a quick start, scoring the first 10 points. The Knights netted the next eight points, four by Vaughns and four by Speller, for a 10-8 game. A jumper by Norwood tied the game at 12 and a Norwood three-pointer gave Neumann its first lead, 15-14, with 12:17 left in the first half.
Over the next 10 minutes, the teams had five lead changes and two tied scores. Knotted at 31 with 3:08 left in the half, Swarthmore ended the half on a 10-2 run to take a 41-33 lead into the break.
After trading baskets to start the second half, the Garnet hit back-to-back three-pointer for a 54-40 advantage. Each team had mini runs throughout the rest of the half, but Swarthmore held onto the double-digit lead to come away with the 85-68 win.
Neumann (3-2) will have its home opener next Tuesday when it hosts Bryn Athyn College. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 PM.
