Women's Hockey Taken Down by Alvernia

READING, Pa. - The Neumann University women's ice hockey team dropped a 5-1 result to Alvernia University in the second game of a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) weekend series on Saturday afternoon.

Gabby Massa scored for the Knights in the loss, while Michelle Winand-Bacon made 31 saves in goal.

Looking to ride the wave of positive momentum following last night's hard-fought shootout victory at home, the Knights headed to Reading to take on the Golden Wolves at the Santander Arena, home of the ECHL's Reading Royals. Neumann was given a great opportunity to take an early lead in Saturday's rematch, as a pair of early Alvernia penalties handed the visitors a 5-on-3 power play in the game's first five minutes. The Knights could not capitalize though as the game remained tied for most of the opening 20 minutes. Despite the extended power-play time for the visitors, the Golden Wolves would be the team who broke through with the game's first goal. The hosts scored at the 15:15 mark to take a 1-0 lead into the locker room at intermission.

Alvernia pushed forward to open the second stanza, blitzing the Knights with three unanswered goals to take a commanding 4-0 lead. Massa retaliated with a goal for Neumann late in the period, but the Golden Wolves remained ahead by three tallies moving into the third.

Neumann tried it's best to get back into the contest in the final frame, but a steady Alvernia defense was able to shut the door on any comeback attempt. The hosts also added an insurance marker late in the game to seal the 5-1 conference win.

Neumann (1-6-1, 1-4-1 UCHC) will return to the ice next Tuesday, November 23rd for a non-conference tilt with SUNY Canton. Puck-drop is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
