ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's ice hockey team returned to home ice on Tuesday afternoon with a 7-1 loss at the hands of visiting SUNY Canton in non-conference action.
Georgia Wunder scored for the Knights in the loss, while
Michelle Winand-Bacon made 40 saves in goal.
SUNY Canton came ready to play after a long trip down from upstate New York. The Kangaroos jumped all over the Knights early in the first frame, tallying twice 1:25 apart in the opening three minutes of the contest to take a 2-0 lead. The visitors then tacked on two more markers later in the period to build a big 4-0 lead heading to the second stanza.
Neumann played much better in the second stanza, outshooting SUNY Canton on its way to the only goal of the period on the scoreboard. The Knights were able to make an early 5-on-3 power-play count as Wunder redirected a slap pass from
Katelyn Brown just outside the crease to get the hosts back in the game.
Sid Squires nearly got a second goal for the Knights later in the same man-advantage, but her shot was stopped right on the goal line as the 4-1 lead remained for the Kangaroos. Despite a few other great scoring chances, the score-line remained the same moving to the third.
The Knights looked to close the gap even further in the final frame, but SUNY Canton stopped any chance of a comeback with a fifth goal in the opening minute of the period to regain a four-goal advantage at 5-1. The Kangaroos then added two more tallies late in the game to skate away with a 7-1 non-conference victory.
Neumann (1-7-1) will rematch against SUNY Canton tomorrow afternoon with another 2:00 PM start at IceWorks.
