WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Neumann University women's ice hockey team opened United College Hockey Conference (UCHC) action with a 5-4 win at Wilkes University on Friday evening.
Katelyn Brown and
Georgi Rowland each had a pair of goals.
Georgia Wunder tallied a goal and two assists.
Sid Squires and
Mikaylee Henhawk each handed out three assists.
Michelle Winand-Bacon made 28 saves in net for the win.
Brown got the scoring started 4:21 into the first period off an assist from Wunder. Wilkes tied the score just over a minute later. The Colonels took a 2-1 lead at the 15:21 mark. Just over a minute later, Rowland scored a power play goal off assists from Henhawk and Squires. Wilkes scored the fifth goal of the first period with just over two minutes remaining in the period to take a 3-2 lead into the first intermission.
The Knights scored the only two goals of the second period, one coming on the power play and one shorthanded. Wunder tied the game at three 2:08 into the second period on the power play off assists from Henhawk and Squires. Brown tallied a shorthanded goal, off an assist from Wunder, at the 7:17 mark to put Neumann up 4-3.
As time was starting to wind down in the third period, Rowland scored the eventual game-winner on the power play. Squires and Henhawk drew the assists. Wilkes got the last goal of the game, coming shorthanded with 1:31 left in regulation. The Knight held on for the 5-4 final.
Neumann (1-2, 1-0 UCHC) will face Wilkes again tomorrow afternoon. The puck is slated to drop at 3:30 PM
