ASTON, Pa. - The Neumann University women's lacrosse team suffered its first defeat of the season on senior day Thursday evening, dropping a 20-5 result to visiting Cabrini University in Atlantic East Conference action.
Brylin Adams paced the Neumann attack with two goals and an assist, while Maggie Blemmings,
Reilly Fiedler and
Abby Kelton also scored.
Catriona Corrigan and
Ava Irwin split time in goal, combining for 16 saves in the loss.
After celebrating their seniors prior to the game, the Knights looked to open conference play with a win. Cabrini had other ideas though, dominating the opening 30 minutes of play from the opening draw. The Cavaliers raced out to a 5-0 lead in the game's first 8:33 to set an early tone.
Adams was able to get a goal back at the 20:00 minute mark for Neumann to make it 5-1, but Cabrini continued to press after that, notching the next three goals of the contest to go up 8-1 with 13:08 left in the half. Fiedler scored at 12:37 off a free position to bring the hosts back to within six, but that was as close as Neumann would get the rest of the way. Cabrini closed out the half on a 7-0 run to take a commanding 15-2 lead into the break.
The Knights played a much better second stanza, but the Cavalier lead was too much to overcome. Despite second half goals from Adams, Blemmings and Kelton, Neumann could not work its way back into the game. Cabrini scored five more second half goals and cruised to a comfortable 20-5 win.
Neumann (1-1, 0-1 Atlantic East) will have the weekend off before returning to conference play next week when it travels to Immaculata University on Wednesday, March 31st. Game-time is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
