Women's Lacrosse Drops Heartbreaker at Gwynedd Mercy

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. - The Neumann University women's lacrosse team suffered a heartbreaking setback on the road at Gwynedd Mercy University on Wednesday afternoon, falling by a score of 11-10 in Atlantic East Conference action.

The Knights were led on the day by the trio of Brylin Adams (4 g, 2 a), Lindsey Fagan (3 g, 1 a) and Keri Mallon (3 g, 1 a) who all recorded hat-tricks on the day. Catriona Corrigan was excellent in goal in the loss, stopping 16 shots to keep Neumann in the game.

In a battle for possible home-field advantage in the Atlantic East Conference playoffs, Neumann controlled play in the opening 30 minutes. The Knights jumped out to a quick 2-0 advantage, as Mallon and Adams scored within the first four minutes of play. Gwynedd Mercy fought back with three of the next four markers however, knotting the contest up at 3-3 at the 14:48 mark of the frame. The two teams traded goals as Mallon balanced out a Griffins goal to make it 4-4, but it would be all Knights the rest of the half. Fagan, Mallon and Adams all scored in the final 2:09 of the period to give the visitors a 7-4 lead and all the momentum heading into halftime.

The Neumann momentum wouldn't last long though, as the Griffins retaliated with the opening two tallies of the second half to cut the lead to 7-6 with 19:47 left to play. The two teams would then go back and forth the rest of the way. Adams made it 8-6 with a man-up goal at 18:27, but the hosts brought the score back to 8-7 with a goal three minutes later. Adams again had an answer to make it 9-7 at the 14:34 mark, but Gwynedd Mercy refused to go away, scoring two straight goals to level the contest at 9-9 with 8:36 to play. Fagan inched the Knights back in front two minutes later with her third goal of the contest to make it 10-9, however the hosts would simply refuse to be denied. The Griffins tied the game up at 10-10 with just under two minutes left to play, then stunned Neumann with a goal with 17 seconds left to take the team's first lead of the day. The Knights picked up the ensuing draw control and attempted to equalize the matchup, but the visitors could not get a shot through to the net as the game finished 11-10 in favor of Gwynedd Mercy.

Neumann (3-3, 2-3 Atlantic East) will close out its regular season this Saturday, April 17th at Marywood University. Game-time is scheduled for 5:00 PM.
