Baseball Takes Two from Pacers

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University baseball team got back in the win column with two wins over Marywood University on Saturday afternoon in an Atlantic East Conference doubleheader. The Knights won by scores of 5-3 and 11-7.

In game one, Nick Glebocki pitched 6.0 innings and allowed just one run on five hits while striking out six. Tyler Szilagyi pitched the seventh inning and allowed two runs on two hits.

In the bottom of the first, Zach Ray singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. The senior came around to score on a single by Cris Diaz for a 1-0 lead. Ryan Lopez hit a solo homerun to lead off the home half of the third inning. Ray then reached on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Marcus White for a 3-0 lead.

The Pacers spoiled the shutout bid with a run in the top of the sixth. The Knights answered with two in the bottom of the sixth. White led off with a triple and scored on a single by Jose Romero. Romero then scored on a sacrifice fly by Colin Pollard.

Marywood hit a two-run homerun in the top of the seventh, but the Neumann lead was enough as the Knights came away with the 5-3 win, breaking their 10-game looking skid.

In game two, Will Hart pitched 7.0 innings and allowed three runs, only one earned, on seven hits and struck out 10. Josh Cruz went two innings out of the pen and allowed four runs, three earned, on three hits.

Shawn Vega hit two homeruns in the game, a three-run shot and a grand slam, for seven RBI in the game.

This time, Marywood scored first with a run in the second inning. Neumann got on the board in the fifth with two unearned runs. The Knights loaded with bases via an error, hit-by-pitch and a walk. Pollard then singled to knock in Vega. Ray reached on a fielders choice and Romero scored for a 2-1 edge.

In the sixth, with two runners on base, Vega stepped up to the plate and hit the ball out left field for a three-run long ball and a 5-1 Neumann lead. Romero then scored on a sacrifice fly by Pollard for a 6-1 lead after six.

Marywood plated two unearned runs in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, Vega hit another homerun, this time a grand slam to left field and a 10-3 Knights advantage.

Neumann added another run in the eighth as White singled up the middle to score Diaz. The Pacers didn't let up and scored four runs in the top of the ninth, but the Knights held on for the 11-7 game two win.

Neumann (7-11, 4-11 Atlantic East) will wrap up regular season action with its series against Gwynedd Mercy next week. The Knights will travel to the Griffins on Thursday for a single game and then will return home for a doubleheader on Friday.
