WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Neumann University women's volleyball team took a pair of matches at a tri-match on Saturday afternoon. The Knights won both matches in four sets, first defeating New Jersey City University 3-1, followed by host Wilkes University 3-1.
Anna Mansel led four Knights in double-digit kills against NJCU with 13.
Lauren Garvey tallied 12 kills.
Maria Brown and
Regan Hickey each added 11.
Dani Smith handed out 35 assists and added 11 digs.
Claudia Bournazel tallied 18 digs and six service aces.
The Knights jumped out to an early 11-1 lead in set one. A kill by Brown gave Neumann the 25-11 set one win.
Set two was a little closer, but the Gothic Knights started to pull away and took a 19-15 lead. NJCU scored six of the final eight points for a 25-17 set two win to pull the match even at one.
Tied at 10 in set three, Neumann went on to score 10 of the next 12 points to take a 20-12 advantage. Kills by Smith and Mansel gave the Knights the 25-15 set three win.
The fourth set remained close and came down to the final few points. Knotted at 23, two kills by Mansel sealed the 25-23 set win and 3-1 match win.
Against Wilkes in the second match of the afternoon, Hickey tallied 19 kills and six service aces. Garvey added 11 kills and 15 digs. Smith dished out 40 assists. Bournazel tallied 11 digs.
In set one, Wilkes held the edge for most of the set. Tied at 15, Neumann took the advantage and led 20-19. Two kills led to a Wilkes timeout with the Knights leading 22-19. Three straight Colonels attack errors gave Neumann the 25-19 first set win.
Tied at 10 in set two, the Colonels went on a run to take a 20-14 advantage. The Knights pulled back to within two, 21-19, but Wilkes held on for the 25-21 set win to pull the match even at one.
In set three, tied at 12, the Knights slowly built a 19-14 edge. Wilkes pulled back even at 19. Leading 23-22, a kill by Garvey and a Bournzel service ace gave Neumann the 25-22 set three win.
The Knights built a 14-7 lead in set four. The Colonels were not going away easily and came back with within one, 16-15. Wilkes remained within striking distance. Up 22-20, a kill by Mansel, a Wilkes attack error and a Brown kill gave Neumann the 25-20 set two win and 3-1 match win.
Neumann (7-10) opens conference action on Wednesday when it hosts Marymount. Action is slated to get underway at 7:00 PM.
