Women’s Hockey Opens Season with Overtime Loss

HENNIKER, N.H. – The Neumann University women's ice hockey team opened the 2022-23 season with a 3-2 overtime loss at New England College.

The game opened with a scoreless first period. Each team has 12 shots on goal in the first 20 minutes, but the defense and goalies had the answer for each chance.

The Knights opened the scoring five minute into the second period as Rachel Frederick found the back of the net off an assist from Kyra Filighera. Neumann took a 2-0 lead when Cecelia Mick scored on the power play. Gia Santorello and Gabby Massa drew the assists on the goal with 2:46 left in the period. New England, however, answered 16 seconds later to cut the lead in half. Neumann took the 2-1 advantage into the second intermission.

Midway through the third period, the Pioneers tied the game at two with a power play goal. Neither team would find the back of the net for the rest of regulation and the game went into overtime.

New England started overtime on the powerplay and took advantage with a powerplay goal 41 seconds into the extra session for the 3-2 win.  

Michelle Winand-Bacon made 40 saves in net, including three in overtime. The Knights also had 20 blocked shots, led by Emma Tauken and Santorello with four each.

Neumann (0-1) will have another chance at New England College as they will Face off again with them. Face off is set for 2:00PM
