ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's ice hockey team fell to Alvernia University 4-2 in the first United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) contest of 2022.
In a game where there are usually power play goals, the teams combined for three shorthanded goals in the game.
After a scoreless first period Ben Gibbons tallied his first collegiate goal midway through the first period while a man-down. Cameron Hatziioannou tallied the assist. Three minute later Tyler Kulas intercepted a pass at mid-ice and scored on a breakaway while two-men down for a 2-0 Neumann lead.
The Golden Wolves scored just over a minute later to cut the lead to one. With 1:24 left before the second intermission, Alvernia tied the game at two and the teams went into the locker rooms knotted at two.
Just 1:14 into the third period, the Golden Wolves scored their town shorthanded goal to break the tie. At the 7:52 mark, Alvernia netted an insurance goal for a 4-2 lead.
Cole DeFazio made 30 saves in net for the Knights. Kulas led the Knights with six shots. Dionne Demke and Hatziioannou each added three.
Neumann (1-2, 0-1 UCHC) heads to Alvernia tomorrow evening in the back end of the home-and-home. The puck is slated to drop at 7:00 PM.
