ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's ice hockey team fell to Wilkes University 4-0 on Saturday afternoon in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) matchup.
The first period was even as both teams had 10 shots. Neither team could light the lamp and teams went into the first intermission scoreless.
The Colonels opened the scoring with a power play goal 4:34 into the second period. The Knights had two power play chances in the second but could not capitalize. Again, the chances were even with each putting eight shots on goal.
The Knights held the pace of the game to start the third period. Neumann put eight shots towards the net in the first four minutes, but the Colonels goalie was up to the tasks and made the saves to keep the score 1-0. Neumann kept the pressure on for until the midway point of the third.
At the 12:38 mark, Wilkes took back the momentum with a goal and added another one three minutes later for a 3-0 lead. The Knights pulled the goalie, but the Colonels scored an empty net goal with 1:46 left in regulation to seal the win.
Ally Joly made her first start in net for the Knights and made 29 saves. The shot on goal were close as Neumann edged Wilkes 34-33. Taylor Ettore led the Knights with eight shots. Lian Sydorowicz added six shots.
Neumann (0-4 UCHC 0-2) will have a home-and-home with Stevenson next weekend. The Knights will travel to the Mustangs on Friday afternoon. The UCHC contest is slated to begin at 3:00 PM.
