ASTON, Pa. - The Neumann University women's ice hockey team dropped a home contest to visiting Chatham University on Friday afternoon, falling by a score of 6-1 in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) action.
Katelyn Brown was Neumann's goal scorer on the evening, while
Michelle Winand-Bacon made 38 saves in goal in the loss.
Chatham came out firing to start the first frame, scoring just 19 seconds into the game to take an early lead and establish its dominance early. The Cougars outs-hot the Knights by a count of 8-1 in the early minutes of the matchup, but Neumann found it's legs midway through the period and actually out-shot Chatham 14-6 the rest of the frame. Despite playing better though, the Cougars still found a way to widen their margin, scoring twice inside the final 3:06 of the period to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Knights responded with the best possible start they could have in the second, tallying their own opening minute goal just 20 seconds into the stanza to cut the lead back to 3-1.
Mikaylee Henhawk ripped a puck from the point square off the right post and Brown was right on the doorstep to bang home the rebound for her ninth goal of the season. Neumann played strongly the rest of the period until a quick burst from the Cougars late in the frame derailed the chances of a comeback. Chatham tallied twice in a 23 second span to boost its lead to a four-goal margin at 5-1 heading to the third.
The hosts tried to fight back in the third, but could generate just seven shots in the period as a tough Chatham defense kept them at bay. The Cougars continued to control play and were rewarded with a late goal at the 16:45 mark of the period to help them clinch the comfortable 6-1 road victory.
Neumann (2-17-2, 2-13-2 UCHC) will look for a weekend split versus Chatham when the two teams meet tomorrow at 2:00 PM.
