Women's Hockey Knocked Off by Manhattanville

ASTON, Pa - The Neumann University women's ice hockey team could not solve a tough Manhattanville College team on Friday evening, falling by a score of 5-1 in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) action.

Lian Sydorowicz scored the lone goal of the night for Neumann in the loss. Emma Swansburg came on in relief in goal and stopped all 20 shots she faced.

Manhattanville set the pace early in the contest, scoring just 1:33 into play to take a 1-0 lead. The Valiants then wasted no time doubling their lead, finishing off another chance three minutes later to make it 2-0 at the 4:43 mark. Neumann stabilized itself a bit in the middle of the period with a good stretch of play, but it wasn't enough to keep the visitors from widening their lead even further. Manhattanville found the back of the net again at 11:43 to take a commanding 3-0 lead. The Knights wouldn't go quietly though, fighting back just two minutes later with a marker of their own thanks to Sydorowicz. The freshman forward took a beautiful outlet pass from Kyra Filighera down the side boards in stride on her way to a breakaway before slotting home her fourth goal of the season to make it 3-1 heading to the second.

The second stanza would be dominated both territorially and on the scoreboard by the Valiants. Manhattanville fired 23 shots towards the Neumann net in the frame compared to just five attempts for the Knights. Two of those shots from the visitors beat starting goalie Michelle Winand-Bacon before Swansburg was brought on in relief with the score 5-1 at the 12:17 mark of the frame. The score remained the same after two periods of play, with Swansburg stopping all 7 shots she faced.

After two periods with lots of goals, the third was a quiet affair. Neither team could get much going offensively, with Manhattanville more than content with simply maintaining its four-goal advantage. Neumann had a few power-play chances to get back into the matchup, but the team could not break through with a goal to start a comeback. Swansburg was again able to shutout the visitors in the final frame, but the Knights would end up falling by a score of 5–1.

Neumann (2-19-2, 2-15-2 UCHC) will close out its season tomorrow afternoon on Senior Day. The Knights will honor their five seniors prior to a rematch against Manhattanville at 2:00 PM.
