ASTON, Pa. - The Neumann University women's lacrosse team dropped its second straight conference contest on Wednesday afternoon, falling by a score of 16-13 to visiting Gwynedd Mercy University in Atlantic East Conference action.
Lindsey Fagan and
Brylin Adams were the scoring leaders on the day for the Knights. Fagan found the back of the net seven times, while Adams picked up five goals and an assist.
Catriona Corrigan was excellent in a losing effort in goal, stopping 14 shots in the loss.
Seeking its first conference win of the season, the Knights took on rival Gwynedd Mercy in a rematch of an Atlantic East Conference first round matchup last season. Neumann broke the ice with an Adams marker 1:53 into the contest, but the Griffins responded with three unanswered goals 1:05 span to take a 3-1 lead at the 9:57 mark. The hosts dominated the remainder of the first frame though, shutting out Gwynedd Mercy while adding a 3-0 run of their own on the way to a 4-3 lead after one. Fagan scored twice in the run, while Adams added a goal and an assist.
The second stanza saw both teams go back and forth. A Griffin goal two minutes into the quarter knotted things up at four apiece before two more Fagan tallies 34 seconds apart pushed the Neumann lead to 6-4 with 11:02 remaining in the half. Gwynedd Mercy fought back to tie the game for the second time in the period at the 3:50 mark, but two late goals by Adams sent the Knights to halftime with an 8-6 lead at the break.
Despite the late first half momentum, things would start to slip away from the Knights in the third. The Griffins would just not go away, scoring five of the first six goals of the half to jump out to another two-goal lead at 11-9 with 7:26 left to play. Adams and Fagan would each record late quarter goals to keep the Knights in the game, but two more goals from the visitors made it 13-11 heading to the final frame.
Gwynedd Mercy kept rolling into the fourth with a pair of goals to widen its lead to the largest margin of the game at 15-11 with 9:32 remaining in the contest. The Knights would not go quietly though, scoring twice through
Bekah Brosky and Fagan in 1:22 span midway through the quarter to get the score-line back to 15-13 with 5:28 to go. That was as close as Neumann would get though, as the Griffins iced the game with an insurance marker a minute later, then closed out the matchup with stellar defense to win by a score of 16-13.
Neumann (6-6, 0-2 Atlantic East) will have a week off for the Easter Break before returning to road action at Cabrini University on Wednesday, April 20th. Game-time for the Atlantic East Conference battle is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
