ARLINGTON, Va. - The Neumann University women's lacrosse was tripped up by a tough Marymount University team on Saturday afternoon, falling by a score of 24-9 in its Atlantic East Conference opener.
Reilly Fiedler led the Knights with three goals and an assist on the day.
Brylin Adams and
Bekah Brosky each tallied twice, while
Catriona Corrigan took the loss in goal despite making nine saves.
The two teams battled back and forth early in the contest before Marymount took complete control of the game late in the first frame. A pair of Brosky goals in the opening 6:03 kept Neumann within striking distance as the freshman's second goal of the quarter made it 3-2 in favor of the Saints. Marymount dominated the rest of the period though, scoring seven unanswered goals to close the quarter with a comfortable 10-2 advantage.
The second stanza would be much closer between the two sides, but Neumann could not shrink the eight goal deficit. The Knights scored four times in the frame via a pair of goals from Fiedler and single tallies from Adams and
Lindsey Fagan, but the visitors' defense still could not stop the Saints. Marymount scored six times in the period to take a 16-6 lead into halftime.
Things would only get worse for the Knights in the third quarter. The hosts scored the first three goals in the period and four of the five markers in the frame to lead 20-7.
Jayana Murray was the lone goal-scorer for Neumann, who trailed by 13 going to the fourth.
With the game in hand in the final frame, the Saints continued to roll. The Knights received goals from Fiedler and Adams, but four more Marymount markers closed out the score-line at 24-9 in favor of the hosts.
Neumann (6-5, 0-1 Atlantic East) will return home to play host to Gwynedd Mercy University next Wednesday, April 13th. Game-time is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
