CHESTER, Pa. – The Neumann University women's volleyball team battled to a pair of wins in a tri-match at Widener University on Saturday afternoon.
The Knights defeated the host Pride in five, 3-2. Neumann then picked up a 3-1 win over Goucher.
Regan Hickey continues to lead the Knights, tallying 18 kills, 15 digs and five service aces against Widener.
Anna Mansel added 11 kills and
Lauren Garvey notched 10.
Dani Smith handed out 42 assists, four service aces and 15 digs.
Claudia Bournazel led the defense with 16 digs. Garvey finished with 14 digs and
Tori Burgess added 10.
Smith opened the match by serving the Knights to an early 5-0 lead. The Pride stayed within striking distance and pulled within one, 18-17. Neumann never relinquished the lead and on a kill by Smith, took set one 25-22.
Neumann had to battle a little more in set two. Down 11-8, the Knights score eight of the next 10 points to take a 16-13 edge. A kill by Mansel put Neumann up 2-0 with a 25-22 set two win. Widener too set three 25-17 to keep the match alive.
In the fourth set, Hickey put the Knights within a point for the match win, 24-23, but the Pride rattled off three straight points for a 26-24 win and forced a fifth set. Set five went back and forth. Leading 11-10, Neumann scored four straight points, capped by a kill by Garvey, to take set five 15-10 and the match 3-2.
In the second match of the day against Goucher, Hickey tallied 15 kills while Garvey added 13. Garvey and Bournzel each tallied 13 kills and Burgess added 10. Smith dished out 35 assists and another five service aces.
The Gophers won the back and forth first set 25-22. In set two, the Knights took a 10-9 lead and increased it to 16-9, including four service aces from Smith. Neumann scored six of the final eight points for a 25-16 set two win, sealed on a kill by Hickey.
In set three, key serving by Garvey helped lead the Knights to 10 straight points and a 20-6 advantage. Another service aces from Smith gave Neumann the 25-9 set three win and 2-1 match lead.
The fourth set was a little closer, but the Knights took the match 3-1 with a 25-18 set four win, capped with a kill by
Maria Brown.
Neumann (4-10) returns home on Tuesday when it hosts Penn State Berks. Action is slated to get underway at 7:00 PM.
