ARLINGTON, Va. – The Neumann University men's basketball team erased a large deficit, but eventually fell at Marymount University 82-77 on Wednesday evening in an Atlantic East Conference contest.
Jalen Vaughns led the Knights with 29 points. Last week the junior scored his 1,000
th career point. Tonight, he scored his 1,0000
th point at Neumann at the 2:58 mark of the second half. Vaughns also grabbed 10 rebounds for another double-double.
Kyle Thompson netted 12 points and
Tony James added 10.
The Saints started off on fire, scoring the first 14 points of the game. A jumper by
TJ Lewis put the Knights on the board at the 16:12 mark of the first half. Midway through the half, a three-pointer by Thompson pulled Neumann to within eight, 24-16. Marymount caught fire again and built a 19-point lead, 51-32, heading into halftime.
Marymount built a lead as large as 25, 63-38, with 15:40 left in regulation. A basket from downtown by
Ryan Starr with 7:06 on the clock pulled Neumann to within six, 67-61. A layup by Vaughns with 4:29 left in regulation brought the Knights even with the Saints at 69.
After trading baskets, Marymount hit a three-pointer for a 74-71 edge. The Saints went 6-of-7 from the line down the stretch to hold off the Knights completing the comeback.
Neumann (11-4, 1-1 Atlantic East) will look to start a new winning streak when it travels to Immaculata on Saturday. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 PM.
