PITTSTON, Pa. - The Neumann University women's ice hockey team took a trip up the Northeast Extension and put together a 5-2 win over United College Hockey Conference (UCHC) rivals King's College (Pa.) on Friday night.
The game started off slow with little opportunity for offense in the first ten minutes. At the 7:41 mark of the first, and after a fierce board battle,
Sydney Ladwig kicked the puck out to
Gia Santorello. She headed to the top of the left circle and whistled in the first goal of her collegiate career, giving Neumann a 1-0 lead.
Â
In the second, the Knights doubled their advantage thanks to a turnover in the offensive zone. As King's struggled to clear,
Lian Sydorowicz intercepted the puck and found
Taylor Ettore all alone in the slot. There was no hesitation as she deposited home her third goal of the season. Sydorowicz and
Brigitte Maikisch were credited with assists on the goal with 5:19 remaining in the period.
Early in the third, King's started to fight back and pulled within a goal with 16:30 left in the final period. A little over six minutes later, Neumann started to put on heavy pressure.
After a mad scramble in front of the goal,
Cecelia Mick notched her third goal of the year, pushing it in off the goaltender.
Rachel Frederick earned the assist, making it a 3-1 game. The Knights didn't hold back from there as just over a minute later, Ettore scored her second goal of the game. After an
Alana Lamplugh slap shot from the near side-point, Ettore shoveled in the rebound for the three goal lead.
Â
A minute-and-a-half later,
Alyssa Papasodero dangled her way into the offensive zone, leaving the puck from
Charlotte Labre, right between the circles. She ripped in her first collegiate goal for a 5-1 lead. The assist from Papasodero was her first collegiate point. Neumann put together a run of three goals in a 2:34 span.
Although the Monarchs scored with 1:21 left in regulation, the Knights held strong for a 5-2 victory.
Â
Ettore not only led the way with two goals, but she also put up seven shots, including four on goal. Frederick also put up seven shots, all of which hit the cage.
Ally Joly had a strong night between the pipes, earning her first win as a Knights with 23 saves. Neumann outshot King's, 36-25.
Neumann (4-11, 3-8 UCHC) will stay in the northeast of Pennsylvania to conclude this weekend's two-game set against King's College. Opening face-off is scheduled for 3:00 PM on Saturday afternoon.
