Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Joly Shutout Leads Knights over King's

PITTSTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's ice hockey team completed a two-game weekend sweep, defeating United College Hockey Conference (UCHC) rivals King's College (Pa.) on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 5-0.

Lian Sydorowicz led the Knights attack with a goal and two assists. Mikaylee Henhawk added a goal and an assist while Gia Santorello picked up three assists. Ally Joly earned her second win of the weekend and of the season. She made 27 saves to pick up her first shutout of the season.

While on their first power play of the game, the Knights worked it around the perimeter, and with 12:24 left in the first, Sydorowicz fired home her fifth goal of the season on a wrist shot from the top of the far side circle. Henhawk and Santorello picked up the assist for a 1-0 Neumann lead. With 3:05 left in the period, Sydorowicz stole the puck in the offensive zone and threw it in front to Taylor Ettore. Although she only got a touch on it, it settled right to Sidney Squires who lifted in her first goal of the year, doubling the Knights' advantage.

Both teams traded chances throughout the second, but it was the Knights who would eventually strike. Sydney Ladwig broke into the zone, starting a three on two break. After a neat drop pass, Jamiyah Alexander wristed a shot on goal. Although the save was made, Jasmine Martinez was at the crease to pop in her second goal of the season with just 34 seconds remaining in the period, giving Neumann a three-goal edge.

It didn't take long for the Knights to add to their lead as they were awarded a power play early in the third. Just over two minutes into the period, Santorello streaked into the zone and whipped a pass across to Rachel Frederick. She took two strides into the circle and ripped a shot into the top corner for her third of the season, extending the lead to 4-0. With 13:20 left, Henhawk blasted home her second of the season, on the power play. Santorello again brought the puck into the zone and dropped it to Sydorowicz who passed across to Henhawk for Neumann's fifth goal. The Knights ended the game 3-for-5 on the power play.

The Knights outshot the Lady Monarchs 34-27. Sydorowicz lead the team with seven shots on goal.

Neumann (5-11, 4-8 UCHC) will be back in action on Friday night, on the road against Arcadia University. Opening face-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
