ASTON, Pa. –
Ryan Starr hit a buzzer beater to lift the Neumann University men's basketball team to an 82-79 win over Gwynedd Mercy University on Wednesday night in Atlantic East Conference action.
Jalen Vaughns led the Knights with 25 points and nine rebounds in the game. Starr netted 24 points, dished out nine assists and grabbed six rebounds.
TJ Lewis put 12 points on the board and
Kyle Thompson tallied 10 points off the bench.
The game came down to the final 0.6 seconds with the teams tied at 79. After a timeout,
Tony James inbounded the ball to Starr who sank the three-pointer as the buzzer sounded for the win.
After the teams traded baskets to start the game, Gwynedd Mercy went on a 6-2 run for an early 12-6 lead. The Griffins built a 12-point advantage, 35-23, with 4:24 left before halftime. The Knights went on a 13-2 run end the half and pull within one, 37-36, heading into the locker rooms.
The Knights opened the second half with an 11-0 run, starting with two free throws by
Kyson Rawls and capped by a three-pointer by Starr, for a 47-37 lead. With 11:02 on the clock, the Griffins pulled even at 51.
The teams would be tied four more times in regulation. Starr gave Neumann a 79-77 lead on two free throws with 11 seconds on the clock. The Griffins tied the game with a layup with five second left in regulation.
The Knights came down the court for the final shot but turned the ball over at the baseline. The Griffins tried to inbound the ball, but threw it out of bounds, setting up the game-winning shot by Starr.
Neumann (13-4, 3-1 Atlantic East) returns to action at home on Saturday when it hosts Centenary beginning at 3:00 PM.
