ASTON, Pa. – In their last non-conference game of the regular season, the Neumann University men's ice hockey team suffered a 7-4 decision to Albertus Magnus College on Friday night.
The Falcons got off the bus from Connecticut with a fast start, taking an early 1-0 lead on a goal just 14 seconds into the game. Although it took some time, the Knights found a way to pull even with 11:15 left in the period.
Dionne Demke initiated a 2-on-1 as
Tyson Rohrer popped home his first collegiate goal on a pass from
Tyler Kulas. Unfortunately for Neumann, Albertus Magnus retook the lead with just over four minutes left in the first.
It was another quick goal for the Falcons, just over a minute into the second, then they added another one, three and a half minutes later, for a 4-1 advantage. With 3:05 left in the middle frame, the Knights took to the power play and turned the momentum in their favor when
Luke Croucher fired home his team-leading sixth goal of the season, assisted by
Cameron Hatziioannou. Less than two minutes later, Neumann pulled within one on Demke's third of the year.
Joey Mancuso earned the lone assist, pulling the Knights within one at the end of 40 minutes.
To start the third, the teams traded power play goals, with Albertus Magnus scoring first, at 2:41. The Knights' goal came just over four minutes later when
Yancy Whitaker scored his fourth of the year at the 6:58 mark.
Nate Dunning and Kulas grabbed the assists, again lowering the deficit to one. With 3:07 left in regulation, the Falcons once again scored on the man-advantage and 59 seconds later, they sealed the game with an empty netter.
Logan Gorbitz took the loss in goal, making 26 saves, with Demke and Kulas each having two-point nights to lead the attack. Demke with a goal and an assist, Kulas with two assists. Whitaker, in addition to his goal, led the Knights with five shots on goal.
Neumann (6-11) will return to action next Friday night for a UCHC conference match-up against Manhattanville College. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start at IceWorks Skating Complex.
