Women’s Volleyball Outpaces Marywood

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Neumann University Women's Volleyball team took a trip up the Northeast Extension, defeating the Marywood University Pacers in Atlantic East play by a final score of 3-1. The set scores were 25-20, 23-25, 25-14, 25-10.

Regan Hickey led the attack with 13 kills, 12 digs, and eight service aces. Lauren Garvey was strong as well, adding 12 kills of her own, along with 11 digs. Dani Smith contributed 32 assists and 11 digs, while Claudia Bournazel led with 15 digs, adding five assists, and four aces. Jules Dill was a menace at the net with 2.5 blocks.

In the first set, Marywood took an early 4-3 lead before Neumann rattled off four straight points on the strength of two Bournazel aces. After the Pacers evened the match at seven, the Knights grabbed seven of the next eight to pull away. Marywood kept it close, but a three-point run allowed Neumann to close out the first set.

The second set was a back-and-forth affair throughout as both teams essentially traded points until 10-10, when the Knights went on a run for a 14-10 lead. It seemed that every time a team would extend the lead, their opponents would respond right back. Neumann at one point had a 14-10 lead but Marywood grabbed eight of the next nine points for an 18-15 advantage. The Knights came right back to tie the set at 18. The Pacers used to final three point run to even the match.

Neumann recovered from the set two loss with a vengeance as they grabbed eight of the first nine points. Marywood regrouped using their own five point run to pull within one at 11-10 but the Knights powered ahead again and closed the set winning 10 of the last 11. Neumann didn't look back as they started the fourth with a 14-1 lead, taking the set by 15.

Neumann (14-7, 2-0 Atlantic East) will return to action on Wednesday when they trek to Virginia for another Atlantic East batted against Marymount University. The match is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start.
