READING, Pa. – The Neumann University men's basketball team fell 69-66 to Cortland on Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the Double Tree Holiday Tournament at Albright College.
Jalen Vaughns led the Knights with 19 points and eight rebounds.
TJ Lewis tallied 15 points and
Jarell Keel added 10.
The teams opened the game battling back and forth and were knotted at 12 six minutes in. Midway through the half, the Red Dragons held a 24-20 edge. The teams then went on a four-minute scoring drought. After trading baskets, Cortland went on a 10-2 run for a 36-24 advantage. The Knights scored the final six points of the half for a 36-30 score at the break.
Cortland built its lead to start the second half and held a 59-44 lead midway. Neumann then went on a 12-0 run over the next three-and-a-half minutes to pull within three, 59-56. Two free throws by Lewis with 2:22 on the clock got the Knights to within one, 65-64. The Red Dragons answered with a jumper. Keel scored the next basket with 25 seconds left in regulation for a 67-66 score. Cortland connected on both free throws and Neumann had the ball with a chance to tie. The Knights got a shot off, but it didn't fall, and the Red Dragons held on for the 69-66 win.
Neumann (2-11) opens conference action on Wednesday. The Knights head to Gwynedd Mercy for a tip-off at 8:00 PM.
