PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Neumann University Women's Ice Hockey team took a ride to the western side of Pennsylvania and defeated the Chatham University Cougars, 2-1, in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference game on Friday night.
After a scoreless first period in which both teams took nine shots on goal, it was Chatham that got on the board first with a power play goal just 27 seconds into the second. It didn't take long for Neumann to respond as
Jasmine Martinez scored her third of the season with 17:12 left in the period.
Emma Tauken earned the lone assist as the game was tied at one.
With 11:44 left in the third, the Cougars were awarded a penalty shot but
Ally Joly was able to make the stop and keep the game square. That save would turn out to be very key as with 4:18 left in regulation,
Lian Sydorowicz scored a five-on-three power play goal for her sixth of the season.
Taylor Ettore picked up the assist and the Knights took a 2-1 lead.
Joly made a whopping 55 saves to earn the win between the pipes. In addition to her goal, Sydorowicz took four shots on goal to lead the Knights' attack.
Rachel Frederick added three.
Georgia Wunder helped the defensive effort with a team-leading five blocked shots.
Neumman (6-15, 5-12 UCHC) will be back in action tomorrow night to take on Chatham once again. The game is scheduled for a 7pm start.
